In Berkeley’s Smart Cities class we learned about Koreans using smartphones to do food shopping in the subway using Tesco Home Plus (explanatory video).  It’s incredible how real everything looks.  What a leap!

Our second semester just began and we’re taking more core courses, including macro economics.  One of my classmates just shared this great video that explains basic metrics such as GDP and CPI, and analyzes the government’s manipulation of those statistics.  Fascinating, if scary and a bit understandable.

Finally, a website that streams TV for free: FirstRowSports.tv

I’ve looked for this unsuccessfully for a while.  Many thanks to Greg for passing it along.

I can’t get over California in December.

During the day it’s hot and sunny, although it’s chilly at night.  Still, nothing like the bitter cold east-coast winters.

And then, of course, I still can’t tell when there’s a small earthquake or just a heavy truck driving by.

R&D-I-Y: Research and Develop-it-yourself

Foodandtechconnect.com has a fascinating article about window-farms.  The project raised more than $250,000 on Kickstarter!  It turns out that this is part of a greater movement of open-source collaboration called R&DIY.  I’d love to get a window-farm and to learn more about the R&DIY concept!

Inc. magazine has a great article about Evernote and the philosophy of Phil Libin, its founder:

Libin knew two things: He didn’t want to be bored, and he didn’t want to merely make money. “A billion dollars isn’t cool,” says Libin, contradicting the speech Sean Parker supposedly delivered to Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg. “What’s cool is impacting a billion people. Whatever I ended up doing, I wanted people to get excited about it. I wanted long lines forming for it.”

I think this is what the next generation of entrepreneurs is about — it’s certainly what I’m about.  More than just making money, making a positive impact on people.

Fascinating article by @michaelblanding via @TuftsUniversity on a cattle vaccine

Rinderpest, a devastating cattle disease, afflicted communities in Africa and not long ago the whole world.  It’s amazing that by applying freeze-drying technology, originally for coffee, Tufts University scientists were able to stabilize a vaccine. Still, to deploy it, they had to understand the communities and culture they were working with — a common leadership challenge — that they also overcame.  As a Jumbo (Tufts alum), I’m proud of their accomplishment!

Awesome interview with Eric Ries on the Lean Startup concept: changing the focus of a startup from ”Are we meeting milestones?” to “Are we learning?”

Here it’s 60°F and sunny. Back in DC it’s in the 40s.
